On Saturday 10/16/10, Foothill Fire hosted a BBQ/Celebration for its members who recently completed a year long training program, which qualified them to be certified as Firefighter I. This program was conducted by way of a curriculum through IFSTA, the International Fire Service Training Association and certification through the State Fire Marshall's Office.

Every student met 3 times a month for 13 months, learning skills and gaining knowledge associated with the many firefighting techniques required by most professional fire agencies throughout the State. In house fire officers from Foothill and outside agencies combined as the teaching staff. The testing process was frequent, approved and recommended by the State Fire Marshall’s.  Throughout the entire program I was amazed to see how well these folks adjusted to the rigors of a classroom atmosphere.   I don't think that most of them realized when they committed to this program how much concentration would be required. I am very proud of every member of this organization and what they accomplished.

Foothill Fire is a volunteer organization, consequently every member that attended did so on their own time on evenings and weekends, with some sessions lasting well into the 10 o'clock hour, with the added work of responding to emergency calls during the entire period. Some of these men and women will go on to become paid fire professionals, and I encourage them to do so, but for those that don't, I hope they will continue to provide fire protection service to the community. Without volunteers as dedicated as these firefighters are, the communities of Valley Springs, Wallace, Campo Seco, and Burson would most certainly be in a fix.  If you recognize one of these individuals, please thank them for what they do, because they do it for you and your family.  "They are the Utlimate Volunteer"  --Mike Siligo, FFPD Fire Chief
