On Saturday 10/16/10, Foothill Fire hosted a BBQ/Celebration for its members who recently completed a year long training program, which qualified them to be certified as Firefighter I. This program was conducted by way of a curriculum through IFSTA, the International Fire Service Training Association and certification through the State Fire Marshall's Office.
Every student met 3 times a month for 13 months, learning skills and gaining knowledge associated with the many firefighting techniques required by most professional fireagencies throughout the State. In house fire officers fromFoothill and outside agencies combined as the teachingstaff. The testing process was frequent, approved andrecommended by the State Fire Marshall’s.Throughout the entire program I was amazed to seehow well these folks adjusted to the rigors of a classroomatmosphere.I don't think that most of them realized whenthey committed to this program how muchconcentration would be required. I am very proud of everymember of this organization and what they accomplished.
Foothill Fire is a volunteer organization, consequentlyevery member that attended did so on their own time onevenings and weekends, with some sessions lasting well intothe 10 o'clock hour, with the added work of responding toemergency calls during the entire period. Some of these menand women will go on to become paid fire professionals, andI encourage them to do so, but for those that don't, I hopethey will continue to provide fire protection service to thecommunity. Without volunteers as dedicated as thesefirefighters are, the communities of Valley Springs,Wallace, Campo Seco, and Burson would most certainly be in afix.If you recognize one of these individuals, pleasethank them for what they do, because they do it for you andyour family. "They are the Utlimate Volunteer" --Mike Siligo, FFPD Fire Chief
